Course details

  • Time: 10:00am to 16:30pm (9:45am arrival for tea/coffee and registration)
  • Venue: Coed Pella, Colwyn Bay
  • Trainer: Training 2 Care
  • Targeted services: Community Wellbeing, Disability Team, Commissioned Services ( PIVs), Vulnerable People Team
  • Target group: Attendees would need to be working in a team where learning about Dementia is important to their post.

Course aims and objectives

DIET is a 6 hour training course that combines experiential elements, classroom learning and group discussions to help learning to understand some of the difficulties people with dementia might experience around mealtimes.

As a participant in DIET, you will explore various factors that could influence food and fluid intake, both positive and negative, and discover ways of supporting people to eat and drink.

DIET is all about increasing understanding and looking at new ways to support people with the goal of increasing food and fluid intake to better lives.

Learning Outcome

Documentation – Understand the importance of documentation around mealtimes and how this can be used to better support people with their food and fluid intake.

The Senses and Dementia – Understand how various sensory issues related to dementia can impact on food and fluid intake.

Agnosia and Food – Understand what agnosia is and how it can cause issues around identifying food and drink.
Communication Disorders – Understand how communication disorders can affect a person’s ability to read menus or make food and drink choices.

Adaptive Equipment – Explore different forms of adaptive equipment used around mealtimes, why they are used and identify barriers and how to overcome them.

The Dining Area – Understand how too much clutter in the dining area could cause difficulties for people with dementia at mealtimes, and how to create dementia inclusive dining spaces.

Supporting Individuals to Eat – Understand the importance of seating position and learn techniques for supporting people to eat.

As a result of completing this course, delegated will be given the skills and knowledge to:

  • Build more positive and trusting relationships with individuals living with dementia around mealtimes.
  • Recognise a range of different difficulties a person could be experiencing around mealtimes and provide person-centred support with eating and drinking.
  • Have a better understanding of the adaptive equipment being used and work towards overcoming and potential barriers when introducing new equipment to an individual.
  • Adapt their approach when supporting people with dementia to eat and drink by being more aware of their own behaviour and how this might affect eating and drinking.
  • Improve the quality of support people receive by better understanding their needs and requirements.
  • Be able to look at the dining environment and identify positive changes that could be made to enhance mealtimes.
