Llansannan flood alleviation scheme wins award

The Institute of Civil Engineers Wales Cymru has awarded the Llansannan Flood Alleviation Scheme the Roy Edwards Award. The award recognises a civil engineering schemes under £5m.

The project was commissioned by Conwy County Borough Council, with the design by AECOM carried out by local contractors MWT Civil Engineering Ltd, who nominated the scheme for the award.

The Llansannan scheme, which was completed in autumn 2022, has reduced the risk of flooding to the village by increasing the capacity of the drainage system by 70%. The work involved installing a larger culvert, building new floodwalls and improving the river channel.

The scheme was funded by Welsh Government.

Cllr Goronwy Edwards, Cabinet Member for Environment, Roads and Facilities – Infrastructure said: “This is an example of flood alleviation work that will prove its worth many times over. This scheme has safeguarded the community for years to come. My congratulations to the project team and contractors involved.”
