Statement 10/05/23:

We can confirm a contractor has been identified to undertake the necessary work. Council staff have met with the contractor and are working together on a timeline of delivery.

Statement 26/04/23:  

We know our paddling pools are hugely popular and we’re doing all we can to resolve the situation. We had contractual arrangements in place to undertake the work, but unfortunately we have been let down at the last minute due to specific issues within the firm employed.  We are urgently trying to find an alternative solution, including sourcing other products that meet the HSE recommended requirements and ensure the safety of everyone using our paddling pools.  In the meantime, preparatory work will be starting on site to enable the works to progress as soon as practicably possible.

Statement 25/04/23:  

We’re very sorry to announce that our paddling pools at Craig y Don, Llanfairfechan, Penmaenmawr and Rhos on Sea won’t be opening as normal in May this year.

We recently carried out a full safety audit of all our sites, which found some areas to be high slip risk.

In response to the safety survey results, we planned to carry out some work to apply a specialist anti-slip coating to the surfaces, but unfortunately the UK provider and installer is now unable to carry out the work due to sudden ill health.

We are urgently trying to find an alternative solution or training for another contractor to carry out this essential health and safety work.

Cllr Charlie McCoubrey, Leader of Conwy County Borough Council, said:  “We know our paddling pools are hugely popular and we’re doing all we can to resolve the situation. We realise how disappointing this will be for people living in and visiting our beautiful county, but the safety of children and families using our paddling pools is our priority.”

The Council is also currently submitting funding applications to upgrade all the paddling pools as we recognise what an important asset they are for our communities.
