Industrial processes are regulated by the authority where they have the potential to release significant air pollutants into the local environment.
The processes which Conwy County Borough Council currently regulate range from quarries and mineral processing plant, larger combustion plant including oil burners at roadstone (macadam) coating plant, crematoria to vapour control systems at petrol filling stations.
The type of pollutant emissions vary significantly from process to process but mainly include:
- Dust and fine particles
- Combustion products or solvents
Certain industrial processes must apply for and obtain a permit in order to operate. These are called prescribed processes.
Control of the emissions from these processes aims to secure an acceptable level of air quality at a local level, but also contributes to the overall UK wide responsibility to comply with European legislation, for example by controlling the release of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC's) which contribute to global air pollution.
