Our commitment
Climate change is the defining issue of our time and the greatest threat to our well-being. We are committed to reducing our greenhouse gas emissions. We will prepare for and mitigate the impacts of global warming, sea level rise and extreme weather events.
Following the Climate Emergency Declaration we set up the Climate Challenge Programme to deliver our vision to lead our communities in delivering a net carbon zero county.
We aim to:
- Reduce greenhouse gas emissions from our estate, fleet, staff commute, business travel, supply chain and street lighting to achieve net zero emissions.
- Offset the remaining emissions by 2030.
- Develop and implement a local area energy plan for Conwy County by 2030.
Conwy’s decarbonisation plan shows the route we will follow to become a net zero local authority by 2030.
What does net carbon zero mean?
Net carbon zero means reducing greenhouse gas emissions and balancing the emissions we produce and the emissions we remove from the earth’s atmosphere.
We will reach net zero when the amount we add is no more than the amount taken away.
Why is it important?
We are already feeling the effects of climate change with rising sea levels and changing weather patterns including floods and severe storms. This will only get worse if global warming increases.
What we do in the next decade to limit emissions will be critical to the future of Conwy and our planet.
We are aiming to be a net zero carbon Council by 2030. Net zero is important because it’s the best way we can reduce global warming and tackle climate change.
Green Dragon Environmental Standard
Our activities have positive and negative impacts on the environment. We recognise that we have a leading role to play in protecting and sustaining our county’s natural environment.
We have put the Green Dragon Environmental Standard into action across all our services. This helps us to reduce and manage our negative environmental impact and to improve our positive environmental performance.
Green Dragon is independently verified through an annual assessment. Our environmental performance is summarised in the annual environmental report.
