Student Workshops

STEM Gogledd supports schools in developing STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) to inspire, promote and support STEM education.

Working with M-Sparc, Conwy Employment Hub funded fantastic workshops at Ysgol y Creuddyn to promote STEM skills and careers.

Year 10 students were tasked with researching, planning and implementing a STEM event for Year 7 students. The aim was to inspire, educate and inform Year 7 students about STEM while also using key skills such as group work, communication and problem solving. The long term aim is to create a legacy for the school and to support the careers and work related experience element of the New Curriculum for Wales by including interaction with employers.

Over a number of weeks, students took part in workshops to prepare for the sessions which covered Space and Rocketry with the students tasked to create a rocket; Engineering with the Egg Drop Challenge; Food and Nutrition based around Gluten free foods and a final session on the Circus and the use of science.

120 Year 7 students took part in the programme. Before the programme they had all been asked to note their interest in pursuing a STEM career and were then asked to repeat this again at the end of the programme. There was an average increase of interest in space careers by 90% and in general STEM careers by 115%.

"It's made me more interested in general about STEM Subjects and careers"

"It was fun! It makes me want to go home and learn more about it"

"I didn't know before this there were careers like that here in Wales"

The success of the programme means that it is now an important fixture in Year 10 and Year 7's curriculum moving forward.
