Vote in person

Polling stations are open from 7am to 10pm on polling day, and are usually in public buildings. You will receive a poll card through the post in the weeks leading up to the election. Voting details will be on the poll card, including the location of your polling station.

It will help the polling station staff if you take the poll card with you to the polling station on the day but you can vote without it.

If you can’t get to the polling station you can choose to vote by post, or ask a trusted person to vote on your behalf. This is called a proxy vote.

Watch this short video about what to expect when you go to the polling station.

Vote by post

If you know that you won’t be able to get to the polling station on polling day, you can vote by post. A postal vote means that ballot papers are sent to you before the election. You will need to complete the ballot papers and send it back in the freepost envelope provided. We need to receive your postal vote before 10pm on election day.

Anyone can apply for a postal vote without having to give a reason.

Vote by proxy

If you know that you won’t be able to get to the polling station on polling day, you can choose to vote by proxy. A proxy vote means that you appoint someone to go to the polling station on your behalf.

It should be someone you trust. If you suffer from a long term illness or disability or you have work commitments, you can apply for a permanent proxy vote for all elections.

To apply for a proxy vote for just one election you must give a specific reason, e.g. you will be on holiday or away because of work.

To apply for a proxy vote, you can either:

  • Go to the Electoral Commission’s website and download the correct form . This will depend on why you can’t vote in person. Print it, complete it and return it to us at:
