We will be carrying out essential website maintenance in the afternoon which will affect some functionality. We apologise in advance for any inconvenience the work may cause and will do all we can to keep disruption to an absolute minimum.

Children and young people

Young people under 16 must have the permission of their parent, guardian or carer to access the Internet. Children under 8 should be under supervision at all times when in the library, in accordance with Library Byelaws.

All users must accept, and agree to abide by the terms and conditions of the Acceptable Use Policy below, before they can use the computers or the wireless network.

You must:

  • use the Internet and the equipment, in an acceptable manner at all times;
  • respect the privacy and sensibilities of other library users;
  • accept responsibility for safeguarding your own personal data, to save any work, and to log out from personal accounts before your library PC session ends.

You must not:

  • attempt to use a library computer using someone else’s library card number and PIN;
  • attempt to access, create, download or transmit material that is illegal, pornographic, offensive, abusive, racist, defamatory or likely to cause unnecessary offence or distress;
  • use the service to commit any form of fraudulent or illegal activity;
  • attempt to violate copyright or software license agreements;
  • attempt to make unauthorised access to other computers or networks (hacking);
  • attempt to make alterations to the set up of the computers or to the software running on them, or attempt to install or download software (including viruses) on to library computer hard drives;
  • distribute unsolicited advertising, or use the computer for the purpose of libel, slander or harassment.

You are reminded that:

  • the provision of Internet access is owned by the Council and all access is recorded and logged. The specific content of any transactions will not be monitored unless there is a suspicion of improper use;
  • the Authority may restrict access to certain sites by means of filtering software;
  • Library staff are authorised to terminate any user's session if they believe that the user has failed to comply with the Acceptable Use Policy. Library staff may also direct computer users to remove inappropriate images or text from the screen if it is likely to cause offense to other library users;
  • Failure to comply with the terms and conditions of the Acceptable Use Policy will result in the withdrawal of access to this service;
  •  In the case of a junior computer user who violates this Acceptable Use Policy, the parent or guardian who signed the Library Membership Form will be notified;
  • The Library Service may also suspend access to this service as a result of significant outstanding fines, charges or the non-return of loaned items;
  • Illegal or unlawful violations of these conditions or activities resulting in loss or damage to the Council may be referred for legal action or to the police.
