Abnormal Loads

Conwy Council, along with North Wales Police, are responsible for the management of the movement of abnormal, indivisible loads within Conwy County Borough Council's highways.

The regulations regarding the movement of abnormal loads is contained in the Government's Statutory Instrument 2003 No. 1998 - The Road Vehicles (Authorisation of Special Types) (General) Order 2003.

An abnormal load is a vehicle:

  • With an axle load of more than 10,000 kilograms for a single non-driving axle and 11,500 kilograms for a single driving axle
  • More than 2.9 metres wide
  • More than 18.65 metres long
  • A weight of more than 44,000 kilograms

Notifications  

  • See table below for notification notice periods.
  • Email to abnormalloads@conwy.gov.uk
  • Hauliers should also submit an Indemnity Form annually to indemnify the authority for each movement.
  • North Wales Police have to be notified separately.
  • You can also contact ESDAL to notify them of an abnormal load request.
