Wynne Construction has been appointed by Conwy County Borough Council to design and build Bwthyn y Ddôl, a new Children’s Assessment Centre in Colwyn Bay.

Bwthyn y Ddôl, a partnership project between Conwy County Borough Council, Denbighshire County Council and Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board (BCUHB), aims to increase access to support for children in North Wales with complex needs and their families.

Due to complete in September 2024, the purpose-built Colwyn Bay facility comprises three single storey-buildings and will be the first of its kind in Conwy and Denbighshire.

The build includes a dedicated assessment unit to provide space for therapies and care, alongside accommodation for planned stays.

The Bwthyn y Ddôl project is funded through the Welsh Government’s Integrated Care Fund (ICF) and Housing Care Fund (HCF).

Work first began in the summer with the demolition of the existing building, and we held a turf-cutting ceremony to officially mark the start of the construction phase in July.  Since then, works have progressed well – despite October being one of the wettest on record.  We have now completed the foundations on all three buildings, with the timber frame and roof trusses complete on one.

Recent progress on site

As part of Wynne Construction’s commitment to working with the local community, they have agreed to landscape an area in Eirias Park with the help of subcontractors, AJC.

They are also working hard to provide work experience on site by supporting general site operative work experience placements through Conwy Employment Hub, and hosting fortnightly visits from creative media students at Llandrillo College who are working on a video to document the build process.

They’ll also be visiting local schools to deliver workshops around careers in construction.
