Islamophobia Awareness 2024
As this year’s Islamophobia Awareness Month draws to a close, Conwy’s Cabinet Member for Audit, Policy and Performance, urges us all to challenge stereotypes about Islam and Muslims and promote unity in our communities.
Every November, Islamophobia Awareness Month is a time for us to take a stand against the anti-Muslim hate experienced by individuals and groups.
Muslims are the targets of hate crime more than any other religious group* and are often represented negatively through misinformation. The impact of this prejudice is discrimination, exclusion and mental and physical trauma.
In addition to Muslims, people who are ‘perceived’ as Muslim - whether that’s because of their language, clothing, or skin colour - are also affected by Islamophobia and anti-Muslim hate.
Cllr Cater said: “We’re committed to creating a safe and inclusive community for all. We’ve taken the opportunity this month to share information with our staff not only about where to seek support, but also steps we can all take to help combat Islamophobia.”
This year’s Islamophobia Awareness Month “Seeds of Change” theme highlighted that even small actions can help build a more inclusive society for us all.
Each one of us can play our part in fostering understanding, compassion and respect and in celebrating the fundamental contributions made by Muslims across Wales and the UK.
Whether it’s through taking the time to learn more, starting a conversation or challenging someone’s negative views, we can all become seeds of change.
So that we can live in a society that is flourishing and free from Islamophobia and discrimination.
