Glyn joined Conwy Employment Hub’s Confidently You project in July 2024 after a prolonged period of unemployment and social isolation. He often struggled with anxiety and depression and with severe dyslexia, he was facing challenges with motivation and confidence particularly when applying for jobs as the rejections were disheartening.
Recognising that he needed support, Glyn self-referred himself on to Conwy Employment Hub’s Confidently You project. This pre-employability initiative, which is a UK Government Key Skills Shared Prosperity Funded project, is designed to assist participants in overcoming various complex barriers to employment through a combination of workshops, mentoring and “courageous” activities to foster confidence, skills development and social inclusion.
Despite his initial hesitations, Glyn gradually became an active member participating in the weekly Confidence and Wellbeing classes; weekly Courageous activity sessions; CV and Interview Preparation workshops; one to one mentor support sessions and the Art and Creative sessions. The regular classes and activities provided Glyn with structure to build new routines and a safe place for growth and connection with peers.
Several sessions were held at Conwy Libraries which proved a significant milestone for Glyn as he learnt about the invaluable support and resources available to all Conwy residents by joining the library network. He took part in a digital workshop and learnt about the libraries’ Wellbeing resources such as the Reading Well Scheme for Mental Health; the free access to the National Databank; the many Befriending opportunities including free clubs, activities and reading groups; the free WiFi, PC and scanning access; the online ebooks and audiobooks as well as the free access to Theory Test Pro, Learn My way, and iDEA to promote personal development.
With this access, Glyn began attending his local library outside of Confidently You and dedicated three hours every day to an online learner driver theory course using Theory Test Pro, which was particularly impactful as his dyslexia had previously hindered his progress in learning to drive. His driving skills and confidence were also improved from his participation in two Ffit Conwy go-karting sessions at GYG Karting in Glan Y Gors Park, Cerrigydrudion. Glyn has now successful passed his driving theory test and is steadily working towards earning his full driving licence, a step that will enhance his independence and expand his future employment opportunities.
Glyn also received CV support as well as training on job applications and interview techniques from Mel, his Conwy Employment Hub mentor, and she and Glyn worked together on applying for a position with Crest’s Assisted Community Employment (ACE) Project which resulted in Glyn securing a full-time paid role.
Commenting on his time on Confidently You, Glyn says
“Being part of the Confidently You project has been life-changing. I can now see a future where I’m driving, working and contributing back to my community by supporting others.”
Mel believes the partnership between Confidently You, Conwy Libraries, Conwy Employment Hub and the ACE Project created a nurturing environment for Glyn to thrive;
“Glyn’s journey illustrates the transformative power of tailored support, structured activities, and collaborative initiatives. His story is testament to how a holistic approach can empower individuals to overcome personal and professional barriers, fostering growth, independence, and a brighter future.”
