These census results include statistics about age, household type, ethnicity, national identity, Welsh language skills, health and religion. Where appropriate we have compared the 2011 Census results with data from the last census in 2001, to show how the characteristics of Conwy County Borough's population have changed over the last 10 years.
The key results
- The age profile of Conwy County Borough is older in 2011 than in 2001. There are fewer children; 16.6% of the population in 2011 compared with 18.4% in 2001. The proportion of retired in the County Borough increased from 23.1% in 2001 to 24.4% in 2011. This is much higher than the Wales average of 18.4% in 2011.
- One person households made up over one third of all households (33.8%). This is a slight increase since 2001 (32.8%) and was three percent higher than for Wales as a whole (30.8%). Sole pensioner households made up 17.1% of all households (19.2% in 2001).
- The proportion of households with dependent children fell slightly to 24.5% (26% in 2001). This was despite small increases in the proportions of lone-parent and co-habiting couple households with dependent children. For Wales, 28.1% of all households contained dependent children, though this proportion has fallen since 2001.
- The proportion of households made up of only pensioners in Conwy County Borough has decreased. However, they still make up a significant proportion of households; 29.2% in 2011.
- The proportion of owner occupier households has fallen since 2001, from 72.2% to 69.4% in 2011. There has been a drop across Wales as a whole to 67.4% in 2011. There has been an increase in households who rent privately in Conwy County Borough - 15.1% of households, compared to 11.4% in 2001. There has also been an increase across Wales to 12.7% in 2011. The proportion of households in social rented accommodation has remained stable.
- The proportion of residents aged 3 and over who speak Welsh has fallen slightly to 27.4% in 2011 (29.2% spoke Welsh in 2001). This is a drop of 2.2%. There was a drop of 1.75% across Wales as a whole.
- The percentage of the population of Conwy CB who were white British in 2011 was 95.4%, a drop of 1.4% from 2001 (96.8%). In Wales, 93.2% were white British in 2011. It was 96.0% in 2001; which is a drop of 2.8%.
- The percent of residents born in Wales has increased slightly to 54.4% in 2011. This is lower than the Welsh average (72.7%). Altogether, 95.7% of residents were born in the UK, compared with 94.5% in Wales.
- 2.5% of residents were born elsewhere, and have lived in the UK for over 10 years. Only 0.4% of residents were born outside the UK and had lived here for less than two years in 2011.
- The proportion of residents in Conwy County Borough of working age who had no limiting long-term illness was 83.5%. This is higher than in 2001, which implies a slightly healthier population in 2011.
- The proportion of Christians in the County Borough has decreased to 64.7% of all residents. This was 77.7% in 2001. This is higher than the Welsh average for 2011, which is 57.6%.
- The proportion of residents with no religion has increased from 14% in 2001 to 26.1% in 2011. The Wales average in 2011 was 32.1%.
