Development proposals within these areas must respect their special character. In addition, greater powers of control exist in order to retain or enhance the environment. In summary, permitted development rights are either more restrictive than elsewhere or may not apply at all; a 'Conservation Area Consent' is required for most demolition work, and six weeks’ notice must be given of any intention to fell, lop or top a tree.

The Department can also advise you about any work that you propose to do, the formal approvals that may be required, and repair grants that may be available.
