Over the next six weeks, the final refurbishment work on Llandudno’s popular Alice Trail will be completed and brand new statues installed in Happy Valley.

Conwy County Borough Council secured funding from UK Government’s Shared Prosperity Fund to carry out the work.

Cllr Nigel Smith, Conwy’s Cabinet Member for Sustainable Economy, said: “I’m delighted we were able to attract funding to refurbish this extremely popular trail in Llandudno and maintain our heritage links with Lewis Carroll and the real Alice in Wonderland, Alice Liddell.

“It’s a trail that’s loved by residents and visitors, so I’m looking forward to seeing them back in place where they belong - for everyone to enjoy.”

The original statues in Happy Valley were created by sculptor Reece Ingram and commissioned in 2000 as part of a Heritage Lottery Programme Project. These statues were refurbished in 2013 and new statues were added in the town centre to form the popular ‘Follow the White Rabbit Trail’. It has remained a much loved trail in the town ever since.

Since the last refurbishment, the statues along the trail had started to deteriorate, and unfortunately the statues located in Happy Valley had suffered severe storm damage. As a result, the statues in Happy Valley are being replaced with new sculptures carved by renowned woodworker Simon Hedger.

Conwy County Borough Council is working with RELM construction to install the new statues. The locations for the new statues have been agreed and work starts this week, with a view to completing by the end of March 2025.

Once completed, the Alice Trail will be re-launched and a new Alice Trail leaflet will be available for purchase from the Llandudno Tourist Information Centre.
