Beware Parking Text Scam
Conwy County Borough Council is warning residents and visitors to beware of a text message scam.
Conwy County Borough Council has received reports of people receiving text messages saying they have received a Penalty Charge Notice (parking fine) with a link to pay via a fake .gov website.
Worryingly, in the cases reported to us, the convincing-looking fake website refers to Conwy. A report by ‘Which?’ last week suggests that this is part of the scam – the scammers use the phone’s IP address to gain the location, in order to make the scam more convincing.
Conwy County Borough Council does not send parking fines via text.
You can report scam websites to the National Cyber Security Centre and texts can be forwarded to 7726.
You can also report the scam to Action Fraud or call the police on 101. If you lose money to a scam, contact your bank immediately using the number on the back of your card.
People can pay to park in Council car parks through cash, card, telephone or via the PayByPhone app. PayByPhone is a convenient way to pay for parking using smartphones. After registering a vehicle, users can quickly pay for parking without needing to carry spare change. Motorists can find out more by visiting the official website at www.paybyphone.co.uk
