Craig y Don Paddling Pool now open

Conwy County Borough Council is pleased to announce that the paddling pool at Craig y Don is now officially open (12.30pm 12/07/24).

The paddling pool at Craig-y-Don is by far the largest of the four pools in Conwy county, and is the final one to reopen following major refurbishment work.

Work has been extensive, in part due to the pool’s size. Expansion joints have been removed and replaced, failed concrete base has been repaired, new drainage has been installed, work to the outfall pipe, and repairs to the perimeter.

The paddling pools at Llanfairfechan, Penmaenmawr and Rhos-on-Sea re-opened in May.

Cllr Aaron Wynne, Cabinet Member with responsibility for Leisure Services at Conwy County Borough Council, said: “This has been a major investment to secure the long term future of these much loved community assets. I’m pleased they’re now all open in time for the school holidays, and I hope we have some good weather this summer so that everyone gets the chance to enjoy them.”

Cllr Goronwy Edwards, Cabinet Member for Infrastructure, Transport and Facilities, said: “I’d like to extend my thanks to the contractors, and our staff as well, for their hard work and commitment.”

The Council is proud of the fact that it has four of only five remaining free public paddling pools in North Wales and recognises the importance of them to both local people and to our visitor economy.

The majority of the work has been funded by UK Government.

Background:

In April 2023 it was confirmed that Conwy’s paddling pools would not open due to failed slip-tests.

It was agreed that whilst the pools were closed, more extensive structural work could be carried out before applying the new specialist coating.

Llanfairfechan - work has been carried out on the expansion joints, on the damaged and worn access steps and the perimeter footpaths, and there have also been upgrades to the incoming water supply.

Penmaenmawr - we have refurbished the walkway, as well as carrying out work on the pool base and material below.

Rhos-on-Sea - we commissioned a structural engineer due to problems with penetrating ground water. A tanking layer was laid and a new pool tank base cast.

Craig y Don - work has been extensive, in part due to the pool’s size. Expansion joints have been removed and replaced, failed concrete base has been repaired, new drainage has been installed, work to the outfall pipe, and repairs to the perimeter.

The work was funded by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, as part of the Community and Place investment priority, and Conwy County Borough Council.
