Have you heard about Conwy Food Partnership?

Food Partnerships are set up to bring members of the community, organisations and businesses together to work towards a more resilient food system, by supporting their food-related initiatives. The Food Partnership work is funded by Welsh Government, and encourages partners to take steps towards increasing access to locally grown produce for all, building community knowledge and skills in food growing, nutrition and cooking, and reducing food waste.

Everyone knows the benefits that come with fewer food miles, less food waste and improved access to nutritional, affordable food. Conwy Food Partnership has provided grant funding to several projects to help meet these objectives.

Garden projects in schools are educating children on growing, harvesting and cooking produce, both on school premises and though veg growing packs to take home. Cook and eat sessions to encourage healthy eating have been run with Conwy Youth Service and New Life Revival Church (NLRC) in Colwyn Bay. The team at Colwyn Bay Library will use their funding to create a community garden where people can pick their own herbs and soft fruits.

Incredible Edible Conwy, which has community gardens at Conwy Culture Centre and the Wishing Well in Conwy, has been given funds to help run their Veg-x (no waste vegetable Stall) which takes place a couple of times each month in Conwy Town. The stall provides free produce to the public that has been supplied by local growers.

Cllr Penny Andow, Conwy County Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Integrated Adult and Community Services, said, “We’d like to see an abundance of locally grown produce that is both affordable and accessible to all, being used by householders and organisations across the County. These grants from the Conwy Food Partnership can bring together individuals and groups to work towards a more sustainable food system in Conwy.”

Anyone who is able to supply excess produce to Conwy Incredible Edible for their Veg-x stall can contact conwyvegx@gmail.com or come along to the Veg-x stall on Castle Street in Conwy.

This project is funded by Welsh Government through the Food Partnership Development Grant, and supported by Food Sense Wales.

The aim of the funding is to develop cross-sector food partnerships which bring together representatives from different sectors to help tackle a range of social, economic and environmental issues, striving for good food for all.
