Holocaust Memorial Day

Holocaust Memorial Day

Holocaust Memorial Day takes place every year on 27th January. The theme this year is ‘For a better future’ and marks the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau and the 30th anniversary of the genocide in Bosnia.

Holocaust Memorial Day is an opportunity for people all over the world to remember the 6 million Jews murdered during the  Holocaust, alongside the millions of people murdered under Nazi persecution of other groups such as Roma and Sinti people, Black people, Slavic people, Disabled people, LGBTQ+ people, trade unionists, those with religious or political beliefs that conflicted with Nazi ideology. It also gives us the opportunity to remember those people murdered during more recent genocides.

The Holocaust threatened the fabric of civilisation, and genocide must still be resisted every day. Our world feels fragile and vulnerable and we cannot be complacent.

Across the UK prejudice and the language of hatred must be challenged by everyone. It’s important to learn the lessons of history so we can personally and collectively take action to ensure we create a safer future where we can all learn more, empathise more and do more.

On Holocaust Memorial Day take time to remember those who lost their lives to genocide, and honour the survivors and all those whose lives were and are changed beyond recognition.
