Option development

The WelTAG Stage One report provided a clear and evidence-based description of the issues that need addressing. It identified a long list of 29 options. From this long list, we shortlisted 3 options for further consideration. We have added a fourth option from the long list following input from stakeholders.

Short list of options

These options for an active travel shared-use route have been chosen based on stakeholder discussions and how well they address the identified issues.

Option 1

Cost: £2,035,000

  • Glan Conwy railway station to Llandudno Junction railway station
  • along the A470 and the A457 Conway Road
  • using the existing shared-use path between Glan Conwy railway station access road and Pendraw R Llan
  • using the recent active travel improvements across Junction 19 of the A55 (Black Cat)

Cost: £8,453,000

  • Glan Conwy village to Llandudno Junction railway station via Junction 18 of the A55
  • through the RSPB nature reserve
  • bridge crossing over the Conwy Valley railway line at the A470 layby
  • link to another active travel route at J18, providing more connections into Llandudno Junction, including along the A546 and Ferndale Road

Options appraisal

We have assessed each shortlisted option and scored them on:

  • scheme objectives
  • environmental considerations
  • economic considerations
  • social and cultural considerations

The assessments compare with the “Do Nothing” option, which is the existing situation with limited intervention and includes any future development in the Local Development Plan (LDP). The assessment also considers how well each option solves the identified problems.
