After having three heart attacks and a pacemaker fitted, Gareth’s health condition made him realise that he needed to find work that was less physically demanding but enabled him to still use his wealth of skills, so he turned to Conwy Employment Hub for help.

Gareth was an experienced cables, logistics and communications specialist who had recently been made redundant. His wealth of experience, an outstanding employment history as well as always excelling and improving his skills with training meant he had the requirements to follow his dream of working in a higher supervisory role, but despite having supervisory experience he needed to upskill and complete the SSSTS (Site Supervision Safety Training Scheme) to be able to have better chance of success when applying for these job roles.

Gareth already had an excellent CV which highlighted all his skills and experience so his mentor, Lorraine, was able to immediately progress looking at which training providers offered the SSSTS and the costs, and then submitting a barrier forms application for funding to finance.

The cost was approved, and Gareth was booked on to the next available SSSTS course which was with WOW Training. The course was held in Holyhead in May 2024 and within days of obtaining his SSSTS certificate, Gareth applied for a Site Supervisor role with HS2 in Birmingham. His application was a success and he was invited to an interview which included a medical assessment.

Lorraine was able to provide funding for Gareth’s petrol to cover his trip to and from Birmingham for the interview while his work coach at the Job Centre was able to provide financial support to cover his accommodation costs which potentially could be for 10-days as he would start work immediately if the interview went well and he passed his medical.

On 10 June, Gareth had his interview and medical assessment and passed both with flying colours and he started work as Site Supervisor for Hercules Site Services plc on 11 June.

Commenting on his new role, Gareth said: “It’s going really well.  I’ve continued with my training and have passed a number of courses and genuinely feel that I am a valued member of the team.”
