Lauren is a 32 year old woman who had a number of barriers including health issues which were stopping her from gaining employment, and she was referred to the Conwy Employment Hub during the first Covid lockdown in March 2020 as it was felt the Hub was more suited to provide her with the dedicated mentoring and advice she required.
Lauren was trying to overcome her issues and had taken the positive step of securing a college place to complete a British Sign Language Level 1 qualification. However, due to Covid, the tuition went online and Lauren was struggling to keep her life on track.
Mel, Lauren’s Conwy Employment Hub mentor recognised her problems and discussed the option of postponing her college place until education moved back to face to face which she agreed. However, Lauren had already paid for her tuition and not being able to get her money refunded was causing considerable stress, so Mel worked with her on liaising with the college and secured her refund as well as the offer to defer her place for a year.
Mel has also secured a volunteering role for Lauren (which has been postponed due to Covid) at a local organisation that provides services for Deaf people to give Lauren the work experience required to apply for jobs on completion of her British Sign Language Level 1; an accredited online course designed around wellbeing and confidence, and a creative art course which also focused on wellbeing, relaxation and confidence which Lauren has excelled at producing beautiful works of art.
To help Lauren with her health issues, Mel has also collaborated with the Benefit Advice Shop who have supported Lauren in applying for “Personal Independence Payment” which will assist Lauren with her day to day living due to her mobility issues.
Mel comments; “The transformation in Lauren has been amazing. She is now confident and sociable, and having gained so many new skills she has her life back on track and is focused on the bright future she has ahead.”
