We have been helping families arrange cremations at Colwyn Bay Crematorium since 1957.
About the crematorium | Cremation options | Cremations: questions and answers
The Colwyn Bay Crematorium is in the grounds of Bron y Nant Cemetery and can be easily accessed from the A55 expressway at junction 20, with ample car parking.
The crematorium complex has two chapels - each seating approximately 100 people, a waiting area with toilet facilities and a memorial room where the books of remembrance are displayed. The chapel is equipped with a hearing loop system.
Viewing
Colwyn Bay Crematorium welcomes families (up to 6 people) to view the coffin being placed into the cremator.
If you would like to use this service, please inform us or your funeral director in advance, so we can make these arrangements. We cannot guarantee that the coffin will be cremated immediately after the service and there may be a delay in order to view the placing. If this may cause an issue we suggest that the service is booked earlier in the day.
All of our service fees include cremation, medical referee fees, environmental surcharge and an ashes transit box. All ashes are available to collect the following morning or the same day with prior arrangement.
Direct cremation
If you opt for a direct cremation, there is no committal service or space for mourners. This option may suit if you are planning a memorial service at a later time.
Your chosen Funeral Director will bring your loved one from their chapel of rest to the crematorium first thing in the morning. You are welcome to come to the crematorium to see the coffin but there is no admission into the chapel. The coffin will be cremated straight away and the ashes will be available to collect later that day.
Low cost cremation
Our low cost cremation services take place at 9am or 9:30am, with a shorter, 20 minute service.
You can add personalised elements for an extra fee. These include music, visual tributes and webcasting. Digital keepsakes of each service are available from our media provider. Please liaise with your Funeral Director for more information.
Standard service
This includes a standard cremation service at your chosen time, usually led by a religious leader, celebrant or family representative. The service lasts 45 minutes (including entrance and exit).
You can add personalised elements for an extra fee. These include music, visual tributes and webcasting. Digital keepsakes of each service are available from our media provider. Please liaise with your Funeral Director for more information.
Farewell service
Our farewell service is suitable for a small number of mourners to spend 15 minutes in the chapel listening to music of their choice.
This is not a full service. The chapel is available for 15 minutes (including entrance and exit) and up to 20 attendees. These services are available at 12:30pm, 12:45pm and 1:30pm.
This option will give closest family and friends an opportunity to say goodbye without a vicar or celebrant leading the service. You can play music to accompany a moment of reflection and this is included in the cost.

If you are holding a service before the cremation, mourners can either wait in the porch or take their seats in the chapel. When the funeral director arrives with the coffin and the principal mourners, the crematorium attendant will check the name plate and accept the coffin, which will be transferred to a trolley. The coffin will be moved into the chapel and placed on the catafalque (a platform at the front of the chapel) for the service to start.
During the service, the body will be committed. When you are planning the service, you will have the choice in the Crematorium Chapel to have the curtains closed or keep them open at this point.
Once the coffin has been moved to the committal room, the name plate will be checked and an identity card will accompany the coffin and then the remains until their final disposal. To comply with cremation regulations, the coffin (including fittings and furnishings) must be suitable for cremation, and it must be placed into the cremator in the same condition as it arrived at the crematorium. This means that it is not possible to include floral tributes with the coffin for cremation.
After the cremation process, the cremated remains are taken out of the cremator and transferred to a treatment area. We are very careful to ensure that the cremated remains are kept separate and are correctly identified. We dispose of metals as agreed with the family beforehand. The cremated remains are kept in a separate container with the identity card, awaiting final disposal.

Following the service, the coffin is transferred to the crematory for the cremation to take place. After the cremation, the cremated remains are what are commonly known as ashes.

There are various options for the final resting place for cremated remains, such as scattering, burial in a grave, placing in sanctum vaults or taking home. Your funeral director or crematorium staff can discuss the options for you to consider.

The service for burial and cremation is the same apart from the committal sentences. The service may take place at your own place of worship with a short committal service in the crematorium chapel, or you may have the whole service at the crematorium chapel. Alternatively, you may prefer a civil ceremony or no service at all.

Cremation regulations are complex and many people use a funeral director, who will be able to make sure that the crematorium receives all the necessary legal forms.

Yes. We work to the Institute of Cemetery and Crematorium Management guiding principles. These state that the container and the body must be placed in the cremator and the cremation begun. The container must not be opened or disturbed, other than in exceptional circumstances, and then only with the express permission and in the presence of the applicant for cremation (usually the executor or next of kin).
