The Colwyn Bay Waterfront Project was initiated to address the condition of the existing coastal defences along the waterfront in Colwyn Bay.

What’s the problem?

Most of the existing sea defences date back to the turn of the 20th century. The decline in beach levels has left the defences exposed in many areas. Increasingly severe and frequent storms combined with the threat of climate change pose an ever increasing threat to properties and infrastructure along the waterfront and inland.

About the project

The Council decided to vastly overhaul the existing flood defences to provide long lasting and effective coastal protection for Bay of Colwyn and its inhabitants. Because of the extensive work required, we saw this as an opportunity to create a promenade that would attract local residents and visitors, providing a boost to the local economy. The Colwyn Bay Waterfront Project will enhance the area as well as protecting the community and its infrastructure.

The Masterplan, published in 2010, identified Old Colwyn frontage as the nature zone, Colwyn Bay as the watersports zone and Rhos-on-Sea as the family zone.
