  • Time: 9:30am to 4pm (9:15am arrival for tea/coffee and registration)
  • Trainer:  Personal Care Consultants
  • Targeted services:  Community Wellbeing, Disability Team, Older People
  • Target group:  This course is aimed at Older People staff and Disabilities

Course aims and objectives

All attendees must be up to date with Moving and Handling of People training.

The course will focus on:

  • Local policy in managing a reablement service
  • Approaches, skills and techniques appropriate to reablement
  • Practical aspects of reablement - functional skills etc.
  • Recording and report writing
  • Outcome focussed care planning

At the conclusion of this training course participants should:

  • be aware of the structure, assessment process and referral process for the local reablement service
  • compare the old ‘hands on approach’ with new ways of working, emphasising the differences between care, reablement and rehabilitation
  • have considered the new ways of working and new approaches in particular what skills reablement workers need
  • have a knowledge of strategies for reablement and what factors need to be in place for reablement to be successful
  • have considered positive risk taking in reablement
  • be aware of a range of communication skills and techniques to try with unco-operative individuals
  • have an improved knowledge of a range of medical conditions, looking in particular at strategies for the practical management of clients with these conditions e.g. strokes, OA, RA, COPD, dementia
  • have looked in particular at manual handling techniques i.e. transfers, assisted walking, techniques and strategies for dressing and washing
  • have an awareness of informal assessments that reablement workers will need to undertake on a day to day basis
  • have practised dressing techniques
  • have considered the importance of equipment as a means to enable clients to be independent
  • have looked at outcome focussed care - what is it?
  • have considered recording and reporting in detail
  • support people in accessing their own resource, family, friends, community and the local support/services available
