Course aims and objectives

  • Define Dysphagia
  • Explore the Anatomy and Physiology of the swallow Function
  • Understanding Oral Dysphagia, Pharyngeal Dysphagia and Esophageal Dysphagia
  • Identify the causes, signs, symptoms, and potential consequences of Dysphagia
  • Overview of Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)
  • Explore how Dysphagia is Diagnosed and Treatment options and support
  • List key individuals involved with Dysphagia diagnosis and care
  • Identify methods of care and support individuals with Dysphagia.

This Dysphagia awareness course will give staff an in-depth awareness of dysphagia; It looks at the anatomy of the swallow function. It looks at how swallowing issues affect the individual and the issues this can cause. This course also explores the International Dysphagia Diet Standardisation Initiative. This interactive course uses practical activities to get staff thinking about how to support individuals with eating and swallowing while promoting independence for the person.
