About the scheme

Conwy County Borough Council has been successful in a Levelling Up Fund bid to reduce the risk of Trefriw becoming isolated during floods.

Since the funding was confirmed, we have been working to make sure that we understand the causes of the flooding, and how to reduce it.  This includes confirming flow rates, topographical surveys and design work.

What are the issues?

During severe weather Trefriw gets cut off by flood water, making it difficult to access emergency services, schools, shops and work.

Flooding on the B5106 is mainly caused by:

  • high water levels in the Afon Conwy
  • problems with watercourse culverts under the B5106

What's happening?

Proposed work to reduce flooding includes:

  • making the culverts larger and improve their inlets (2024-2025)
  • lifting the B5106 above the Afon Conwy flood level (2025-2026)

This scheme will reduce the frequency of road closures caused by flooding.

Locations

During 2024-2025 we will work on five watercourse culverts:

  • Little Canada:  enlarge the culvert and straighten it out.
  • Coed Cae Coch Quarry:  provide a screen to remove large rocks, enlarge the culvert across the quarry access and provide new pipes under the road.
  • Coed Gwydyr (north):  enlarge the culvert and straighten out the inlet.
  • Coed Gwydyr (south):  enlarge the culvert under the B5106, and collect overspills from ditches on Trefriw Terrace into a new highway drain.
  • Glan Aber:  enlarge the culvert and straighten out the inlet.

During 2025-2026 we propose to raise the B5106 in the low spots which dip below the river flood levels.
